The Nashville Area Volunteer of the Month is Mike Chandler! Mike volunteers his time with the Disaster Cycle Services team, and most recently led charge for the Sound the Alarm Save a Life smoke alarm installation event. Read more about Mike from our interview with him below:
How did you become involved with the
Red Cross?
I was introduced to the Red Cross
Disaster Cycle Services many years ago by a man I met during my travels.
The story of his involvement motivated me to learn more about the Red Cross
role in disaster relief and eventually my association.
What is your favorite part of volunteering for the Red
Cross? Working with incredible Red Cross
people (Volunteers and Staff) dedicated to a single focused mission of helping
those impacted by a disaster.
What is your best memory with the Red Cross? While this may not be the “best memory” it is certainly my most
impactful. It was during my first disaster response deployment working on a
mobile feeding team from the back of an Emergency Response Vehicle. Our mission
was to drive up and down the flood ravaged streets of Baton Rouge Louisiana delivering
food, water and snacks to clients working to recover their belongings, repairing
their homes and putting their lives back together. Meeting those impacted
by such a disaster and helping them through their day with a simple basic
necessity is a memory and a feeling I will not forget.
What do you enjoy doing during your free time/What are your hobbies? I am a Photographer and Golfer
What advice would you give to
someone who is new to the Red Cross? For Disaster Cycle Services, learn about all that the Red
Cross has to offer and make informed decisions about how you what to serve
in The Red Cross. Then get out in your local area or on a deployment
and serve, it will change your life.
