California Couple Volunteer as Red Cross Disaster Responders after Previously Receiving Help after a Home Fire

Steve and Barbara Simpson came to Tennessee to work as caseworkers from their home state of California. The two decided to become Red Cross volunteers after they received Red Cross assistance themselves after a multi-family home fire. During that time, the Simpsons received compassion and care from the Red Cross volunteers along with financial support when they needed it. They knew after that experience, they wanted to be a part of the organization, and wanted to show that same care and compassion to others.

Together, they have each deployed six times to disasters over the last few years, but this is the first time they have deployed together after tornadoes tore through communities in Tennessee on Dec. 9, 2023.

While the hours can be long, they have enjoyed this deployment together and will look forward to whatever assignments come available for them in the future.
