Nashville Predators and American Red Cross Make a Goal To Get Blood Donors To Give Blood Feb. 20-Feb. 24

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Feb. 13, 2023 — During February, the American Red Cross continues a great partnership with the Nashville Predators Foundation and their fans asking blood donors in cities across Tennessee and Kentucky to donate Feb. 20-Feb. 24.

“We have seen so many challenges over the past two years for blood donation,” said Garry Allison, regional donor services executive with the Red Cross Tennessee Valley Blood Services Region. “It is not uncommon for us to see a decline in donations during the winter months, but the need for blood doesn’t slow. It is so important for all who can give to make appointments with this drive to help us ensure the blood is readily available when needed by so many of our local hospitals’ patients.”

The partnership with the Preds is vital for the American Red Cross. Red Cross supplies 40 percent of all blood products to hospitals across the nation. “All blood types needed,” Allison added. “However, we are especially in need of type O positive and O negative blood types. O negative type blood is a universal donor that can be given to any patient of any blood type. Those type O blood bags are the ones that are used most by hospital emergency rooms to treat trauma patients and during surgeries.” Eighty percent of blood donated to the American Red Cross is acquired from blood donations made at blood drives.

All presenting donors will receive a Predators foam hockey puck, while supplies last. As a thank-you, all who come to give blood, platelets or plasma at Red Cross blood drives during February, will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email, thanks to Amazon. Join the Red Cross in elevating Black Excellence during Black History Month: Discover and support Black-owned businesses on Amazon! Plus, those who come to donate will also be automatically entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Clearwater Beach, Florida, including a three-night hotel stay, round-trip airfare, a $750 gift card and more. Details are available at rcblood.org/heart.

Blood drive safety

The Red Cross follows a high standard of safety and infection control. The Red Cross will continue to socially distance wherever possible at blood drives, donation centers and facilities. While donors no longer have to wear a face mask, individuals may choose to continue to wear a mask for any reason. The Red Cross will also adhere to more stringent face mask requirements per state and/or local guidance, or at the request of blood drive sponsors. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at a drive.

How to donate blood

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. To register for a Predators blood drive be sure to enter the code PREDS19. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.
